30 November 2016

Discovery, Research and Development of New Antibiotics

Wednesday 30th November, 1600 – 1800hrs, Macmillan Room, Portcullis House, Westminster

The aim of this meeting is to appraise parliamentarians from both houses, all parties and stakeholders, with the opportunity to hear about the exciting new activities to stimulate discovery, research and development of new antibiotics.

The creation of CARB-X was prioritized in the 2015 US National Action Plan on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (CARB), which called for a biopharmaceutical accelerator to spur pre-clinical product development. CARB-X was launched on 28th July 2016 to accelerate the progression of a diverse portfolio of innovative antibacterial products into clinical trails over the next five years, investing over US$350 million in funding received from BARDA, The Wellcome Trust and The AMR Centre.

Established in May 2016, The AMR Centre is a key part of the UK’s response to the global threat from antimicrobial resistance. Based at Alderley Park, Cheshire, The AMR Centre is a joint private-public initiative to support/accelerate the development of new antibiotics and diagnostics through a fully integrated development capability, offering translational R&D from pre-clinical hits through to clinical proof of concept.
